The tragic love story of Lieutenant Sixten Sparre and tightrope walker Elvira Madigan set a new standard in colour cinematography with it's lyrical images of nature and experimental use of shallow depth of field. Director Bo Widerberg was nominated at the Cannes Film Festival and Pia Degermark won the actress award in her first acting role.
